Auto meters and Eternity.

(An anglicised version of a regular conversation between me and an auto driver)

Me                         : Is your meter working?
Driver                   : where do you want to go?
Me                         : Vasant Kunj.
Driver                   : Meter’s not working, it’ll cost 200rs.
Me                         : No chance.
Driver                   : ok, bye then.

Seem familiar to those of you in India? Am sure it does. I always wonder what’s the point of that meter? I sit there at times and the driver’s left it on from a previous ride and I can see that it’s working perfectly fine. He just didn’t want to use it. If he would only turn it on there’d be no fighting. There would be no mistrust or misunderstanding. He has the ability to have a trouble free ride where the customer goes away happy and the driver himself drives away as a trustworthy man. He has the chance!! With on flick of that blessed meter he can be so much more than just another auto guy on the road out to cheat his Savaari (passenger) out of a few extra rupees. It’s sad that he settles for less, thinking he’s gotten more.
As annoying as this nearly routine and daily situation might be, there’s a similarity here which caught my eye. God has given us Spirit through the Jesus. Scripture teaches that He will reside in us, abide with us. We have the potential and ability to be so much more than just the average good person who struggles with sin just like everyone else. But we just don’t use that “meter” within. We don’t harness the ability… the God given ability to be so much more. Much like the auto driver we settle for less while thinking we’re actually getting more.
