The tired tyre.

“They were so small you would not even know they were there.
But they were letting air out slowly and consistently.”
- Tyre puncture repair man

I had a puncture and when we changed the tyre we found that the spare was also flat. I didn’t remember it being flat but there it was as flat as it could possibly be. After doing a lot of running around and getting a mechanic to tag along we finally pulled in to the shop with that spare flat tyre. When he started to work on it to locate the puncture he found THREE of them. But what he said was you would not have noticed them as punctures because they are so small, they only let out air in tiny quantities. He told me that because I had not used the spare for all this time it just lay there in the boot with air slowly escaping until it was totally flat. I was thinking about this thought at night. If it was a big puncture (the ones where a nail gets lodged in and air escapes quite quickly) I would have picked up on it much sooner. But these smaller ones are harder to locate and harder to notice until they have let out a considerable amount of air.

As is my mind’s tendency, I saw a connection to my life. There are events and circumstances (sometimes even people) in life that are like that big puncture. They occur or show up and the “air” inside you escapes in noticeable amounts. These draining circumstances are identifiable and one can quickly make alterations and course changes to avoid being depleted. But there also the many activities, demands, people, worries that are much like those small punctures. They are difficult to identify and very hard to notice until they have done the damage. They let the “air” out of us at such a tiny rate that we don’t see it as an emergency situation and we just adjust lifestyles to match living with “lesser air in the tyre”. But suddenly we find ourselves flat.

It’s a good practice to check on life and all its priorities and demands to see where the air is escaping. To have routine checkups and ensure all small and big punctures are being fixed. To have clear indicators to let you know when it’s time to pull over and “get air”.

Happy driving!
